Cheap Tech

Everyone knows technology is changing things. A lot of literacy and language training and acculturation is done in traditional classroom fashion, but what cheap technologies can be adapted to more quickly and efficiently teach students or to supplement their learning when class is not in session?

I experimented with free online ESL content and podcast lessons. A cheap MP3 player with earbuds goes for about $20, so all a student would need to do is to go to a Website and download material. If she doesn't have a home computer, she can download from the instructor's laptop or any land-line based machine. My student who experimented with this method really liked it a lot.

Cheap tech can help bridge a bit of the digital divide until public policies get around to addressing major problems (like insuring greater Internet and wireless access) or until the individual student can afford to pay for the technology (in our area, monthly Roadrunner fees, a laptop or desktop machine, virus and security software).
